Ajax’s Kolbeinn Sigthorsson could miss the remaining season

The Icelandic ace has remained sidelined for the past couple of months, and it seems likely that he will miss the remaining Eredivisie season’s action as well.
Reports from Amsterdam Arena confirm that Ajax Amsterdam could have to do without the services of Kolbeinn Sigthorsson for the remainder of the 2011/12 campaign.
The Icelandic ace sustained an injury to his ankle in the 1-0 loss at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Groningen-c39119 in October 2011 and has been out since then. 
Earlier reports indicated that the powerful forward would be match fit again shortly after the winter break. However, recent reports have now confirmed that the youngster could be forced to watch the remainder of the season from the sidelines.
Frank de Boer, the Amsterdammers head coach, has stressed that he is hopeful about the 21-year-old returning to action before the end of the season.
“I hope that he still has a role to play in the decisive stages of the season. However, it looks as if he will have to focus on next term, and make sure he's fully recovered by then”, De Boer was quoted as saying to the media.
The Dutch mentor then went on to reveal that the young striker was not fully fit when he returned from the U-21 European Championship last summer. However, he still played several matches which only aggravated his injury.
"He wasn't fully match fit when he returned from the Under-21 European Championship last summer. He was being plagued by groin problems, and used pain killers in several games. His lengthy absence now is a result of all that", De Boer concluded.
The Amsterdammers boss, however, asserted that his side is not looking for replacements in the ongoing winter transfer market, as they have http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dmitri-Bulykin-c11392 and Nicolas Lodeiro, who can play at the number nine position.
Sigthorsson, who arrived at Amsterdam Arena in the summer of 2011 after making 32 appearances for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar, has thus far netted an impressive five goals in eight Eredivisie appearances.
However, it seems likely that the Icelandic International will now have to wait until the start of 2012/13 season to play again his new side.
