The Amsterdammers claimed the 2010/11 Eredivisie title on match-day 34 after beating the Tukkers 3-1, and the 23-year-old midfielder wants to repeat the feat.
Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Siem-de-Jong-c33482, has insisted that his side wants to secure the Eredivisie title at the earliest. The Amsterdammers are currently sitting six points clear at the summit of the league table with only 12 points left to play for in the
2011/12 season.
The four time European champions lifted the title on the final day of the 2010/11 season, when they defeated the Tukkers 3-1 at home. Despite the club looking to secure the title at the earliest, the midfielder-c*m-forward has expressed his desire to repeat
last term’s heroics in the 2011/12 campaign as well.
“We want to secure the league title as soon as possible, preferably in the match against Twente. I'd love it if we could wrap up the title against them. We already won the title after a direct confrontation with them once before, and it would be great if
we could do it again”, De Jong was quoted as saying to the media.
The 23-year-old has played an integral role in his side’s rise to the summit this season. After the Amsterdammers striker, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, sustained an ankle injury in January, Frank de Boer instated the Dutch ace in the no. 9 role.
De Jong did impressively well in his new role, netting nine goals while setting up five more along the way. Due to his good performances upfront, the reigning Eredivisie champions climbed up in the league standings to occupy the top spot.
Despite enjoying the best goal difference in the league and being six points ahead of the second placed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar, the 23-year-old has asserted that his side must remain focused until the end of the season.
“We realise that we're not there yet though. We have to win the next few games. If we start spilling points now, the other teams will get hope again”, De Jong concluded.
The Dutch International has an ongoing contract at Amsterdam Arena that runs until the summer of 2015.
