The 23-year-old midfielder has insisted that his side can achieve good results in the UEFA Champions League should they stay sharp and play according to their philosophy.
Ajax Amsterdam midfielder-c*m-striker, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Siem-de-Jong-c33482, has expressed optimism over his side’s chances in UEFA Champions League, and has stressed that they have the quality to compete against the top teams.
After being drawn in the Group D along with Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, De Joden could only hope for a miracle in order to progress through to the next phase of the competition.
However, the Amsterdammers' skipper has expressed confidence in his side’s abilities, and has revealed that they can make life difficult for any team should they play their own game.
“Mistakes can be fatal. We have a young group of players, and we have to try to play our own football. If we play our own possession game, we can make it difficult for our opponents”, De Jong said while talking to UEFA.com.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who can also play in a central striker role, went on to express his desire of claiming a victory against the La Liga champions.
“We've played against Real Madrid in the last two seasons and haven't beaten them once. So it would be nice to play against someone like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Xabi-Alonso-c37045, and to go on and win that game”, De Jong added.
The Amsterdam giants have not only lost all of their last four encounters against Los Blancos, they have also failed to even find the back of the net.
The Dutch international, who has thus far donned the jersey of Ajax in over 100 league matches, has insisted that his side must remain sharp throughout the 90 minutes if they are to achieve a good result.
“We have to be careful we don't find ourselves thinking it's all going well and suddenly the ball's in the net at our end. We have to stay sharp, because every mistake leads to an immediate counterattack”, De Jong concluded.
After losing 1-0 in their Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund, Ajax will play against Real Madrid at Amsterdam Arena in their next encounter on October 3.
