The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved a modified version of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), making Hot Spot and audio-tracking devices mandatory elements for the usage of the system.
In addition, the ICC chief executives’ committee made a collective decision to limit the batsman’s privilege to challenge Leg-before Wicket (LBW) decisions.
According to the new rules, the ball tracking system has been removed and the batsman could challenge a LBW decision in the case of bat-and-pad only.
While ICC has been heavily criticised for axing substitute runners, most of the recent decisions are being appreciated by the cricketing circles.
Former Indian skipper, Ajay Jadeja, came out in support of ICC’s decision to eliminate batsmen’s liberty to challenge every LBW decision, saying, "Growing up, I was always taught not to question an umpire's decision it was the basic thing. What you are going to do with LBW decisions being scrutinised is make it tough for junior coaches who are teaching a child. Only at the international level will he be exposed to technology.”
The former all-rounder described that the DRS should not undermine the authority of match officials since they come up at the international level after years of training and practice.
Moreover, he made it clear that if a cricketer is given full authority to go against umpire’s judgements, it will create a negative mindset among the youngsters.
"I am okay with technology aiding an umpire because it's important to get every decision right. However, players shouldn't have a choice to question an lbw decision," shared the 40-year-old former player who served http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in 15 Tests and 196 One Day Internationals (ODIs).
The Gujarat-born cricketer also made it clear that everyone should accept the game with little errors as 100 percent accuracy cannot be achieved with even more advanced technology.
Terming the umpire as the boss of the play, Jadeja insisted that the basic rule such as umpire’s authority must not be denied in any case. Meanwhile, he hoped that the new plan, with the essentials of Hot Spot and audio-tracking, will work positively for the betterment of the game.
