Ajay Jayaram ousts Sourabh Varma in Men’s Singles first round at India Open Super Series
India’s Ajay Jayaram struggled hard in his Men’s Singles first round encounter when he defeated his compatriot Sourabh Varma in a tough fight at the India Open Super Series 2012 on Wednesday, April 25, in India.
The in-form Jayaram has been playing elevated badminton for the last one year and has achieved a higher world ranking as he has been placed at number 27 in the world.
Jayaram had to struggle hard to beat his spirited opponent who put up strong resistance in the whole rubber-set contest.
On the other hand, Sourabh played well in opening both sets but failed to dominate the game in the final set and lost the match to his higher ranked country-mate.
In the opening set, both shuttlers played remarkable badminton and remained close on the board as they knew each other’s game quite well.
Until the mid-game interval, it was Jayaram who was slightly ahead on the board by reaching at 11-9.
After the interval, Sourabh tried to level the score but failed as Jayaram was in complete control.
The higher ranked Indian progressed with a great pace and took the set with a comfortable difference of 21-15.
In the second game, Sourabh became aggressive as he played fast and attacking badminton from all areas of the court and remained successful in taking 11-9 lead until the break.
After the mid-game break, Jayaram changed his tactics and managed to remain equal on the board until the score reached at 13-13.
However, he lost his focus at this stage and also made a few mistakes and eventually lost the set with a 17-21 score on the board.
In the deciding set, both men played well by keeping the pace of rallies high and reached at 8-8 when Jayaram controlled the affairs and started to dictate the pace. He took an 11-8 lead until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Jayaram continued his positive run against Sourabh and easily ended the final game with a tremendous margin of 21-11.
Jayaram emerged as the winner in this first-round fight with a 21-15, 17-21 and 21-11 score on the board.
