Ajay Maken asks BCCI to go to the root of the spot fixing issue – Cricket News Update
Irked by the latest sting operation carried out by a Hindi news channel showing five uncapped Indian players conspiring to receive corrupt payments through spot-fixing, the Indian Sports Minister, Ajay Maken, has advised the country’s
apex cricketing body, Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 (BCCI), to resolve the matter at its earliest.
Speaking to the media reporters on Wednesday, Ajay Maken directed the board to take all necessary actions required to root out the menace from the sport, adding that only suspending the players involved in corrupt practices is not
enough.
“BCCI should go to the root of the cause… Suspending of five players will not solve the problem,” said Maken during a media encounter on Wednesday.
The players in the video footage shown by the TV channel include Mohnish Mishra (Pune http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abhinav-Bali-c41754. The IPL governing council, after a
teleconference with the BCCI officials on Tuesday, suspended all of the five players with immediate effect, pending inquiry.
The sports minister feels that BCCI’s excessive involvement into IPL matters is creating problems and advised the board to let the franchises run the league.
"IPL should be at a arm's distance from BCCI. It should not be under BCCI. IPL and BCCI should be away from each other so that there is no overlapping of interests," he said.
"If you look at English Premier League and other leagues world over, they always have distance from their parent sports federations," he added.
The sports Minister also asked the Indian cricket board and other sports federations of the country to come under the purview of Right to Information Act (RTI) to ensure transparency in each game.
“The time has come that BCCI & other sports federations should come under the RTI,” said Maken.
"They should not submit their accounts to us but they should open their accounts to RTIs. This will bring much-needed credibility to BCCI," he added further.
It’s not only the IPL, rather the sting operation has shown players involved in corrupt practices in the domestic cricket of India as well. The channel has also played a recording of a conversation in which Sudhindra is negotiating a fee to deliver the no-ball
in a domestic one-day match in Indore in April last year.
