Akihiro Yamaguchi earns Boys 200m breast-stroke gold title – 3rd World Junior Championships
Akihiro Yamaguchi of Japan earned the gold medal of Boys 200m breast-stroke on day four of the 3rd World Junior Championships, organised by the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) on Friday, August 19, in Lima, Peru.
The 17-year-old Yamaguchi earned the respect of arena, by winning the gold medal of the 200m event in a new championship record time of 2 minutes and 11.70 seconds. His time was 4.08 seconds below the previous championship mark of 2 minutes and 14.78 seconds,
made by Russian swimmer, Alexey Zinovyev in 2009. Nevertheless, his time was 4.39 seconds slower than the world record of 2 minutes and 07.31 seconds, made by Christian Sprenger of Australia in 2009.
The gold medallist was trailed by Oleksiy Rozhkov of Ukraine, who remained 2.24 seconds slower than Yamaguchi and posted a time of 2 minutes and 13.94 seconds for the silver medal. The third position of the event was claimed by Rozhkov’s team-member, Maksym
Shemberev, who remained just 0.14 seconds slower and reached the podium for bronze medal in a time of 2 minutes and 14.08 seconds.
The bronze medallist edged out his closest competitor, Chase Kalisz of United States with a discrepancy of only 0.05 seconds and Kalisz ended fourth, with a timing of 2 minutes and 14.13 seconds. Marat Amaltdinov of Russia was the fifth best swimmer of the
event, as he stayed 1.10 seconds slower than the American swimmer and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 15.23 seconds.
In the meantime, Josh Prenot of United States surfaced as the sixth position holder of the event, as he stayed 0.05 seconds away from his former finisher and touched the finishing wall to post a time of 2 minutes and 15.28 seconds. He was followed by Flavio
Bizzarri of Italy, who acquired the seventh position with a timing of 2 minutes and 16.04 seconds. Buster Sykes of Australia was the last swimmer to finish his swim, as he ended up eighth, with a timing of 2 minutes and 17.04 seconds.
The championship will continue for two more days to complete all swimming events.
