Akihiro Yamaguchi impresses in Boys 100m breast-stroke semi-final – FINA World Junior Championships
Akihiro Yamaguchi of Japan impressed the crowd in the semi-final of Boys 100m breast-stroke meet on the first day of the 2011 Federation Internationale 3rd World Junior Championships on Tuesday, August 16, in Lima, Peru.
Yamaguchi won the finest qualification spot of the event in a new championship record time of 1 minute and 01.98 seconds. His time was just under his own record of 1 minute and 02.00 seconds, made by Yamaguchi in the qualifying rounds of same session, earlier
at the meet. In addition, his effort was 3.40 seconds slower than the world record of Brenton Rickard of Australia, who pocketed the title of same event in 58.58 seconds at the 2009 World Championships.
The Japanese swimmer was in a lead of 0.08 seconds over his closest competitor, Panagiotis Samilidis of Greece, who qualified as the second fastest swimmer, with an effort of 1 minute and 02.06 seconds. The third spot was secured by Nicolas Fink of United
States, who remained 0.48 seconds behind Samilidis and reported in a time of 1 minute and 02.54 seconds.
In the meantime, Fink edged out his closest rival, Craig Harry Benson of Great Britain, who stayed only 0.04 seconds slower than him and qualified for the final round as fourth best swimmer in 1 minute and 02.58 seconds. Benson was 0.22 seconds faster over
his subsequent competitor, Roman Trussov of Kazakhstan, who posted a fifth fastest time of 1 minute and 02.80 seconds.
Moments later, Oleksiy Rozhkov of Ukraine was sighted as the sixth best swimmer of the semi-final, as he finished his two-lap swim in a time of 1 minute and 03.08 seconds. He was followed by Roberto Parisi of Italy, who was just 0.01 seconds behind him and
posted a time of 1 minute and 03.09 seconds. Anton Tischenko of Russia was the final swimmer to enter the final, as he produced a time of 1 minute and 03.23 seconds.
The session concluded with the completion of all events, while these top-eight swimmers will compete with each other in the final to secure a podium finish.
