Aksana Petrushenka and Marcus Titus win 50m breast-stroke meet - World Deaf Swimming Championships
Aksana Petrushenka and Marcus Titus won the title of 50m breast-stroke meet in Women’s and Men’s category respectively, on the foremost day of the 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships on Sunday, August 7, in Coimbra, Portugal.
In the Women’s corner, Petrushenka claimed the title of the event in a championship record time of 33.34 seconds. Her time was just 0.07 seconds away from her own world record of 33.27 seconds, set by her during 2009.
Petrushenka of Belarus was 0.46 seconds ahead of her closest competitor and team-mate, Natalia Deeva, who earned silver medal in 34.80 seconds. Iryna Tereshchenko of Ukraine was the third position holder of the event, as she ended her single-lap sprint in
35.11 seconds.
She was followed by Petrushenka’s team-member, Anastasiya Filipchyk, who transpired as the fourth fastest swimmer in 36.05 seconds. In the meantime, Ukraine’s Natalya Korniyenko and Russia’s Alena Akexeeva occupied the fifth and sixth best spots, with timings
of 36.36 and 36.56 seconds, respectively. They were followed by Jessica Weeden of United States and Sofia Ek of Sweden, who secured the seventh and eight positions, with timings of 36.58 and 37.20 seconds, respectively.
Moments later, Titus captured the title of Men’s equivalent event in a Deaf World Record time of 27.79 seconds. His astonishing efforts were 0.38 seconds under the world mark of 28.17 seconds, made by Titus in the qualifying rounds of the same event in the
earlier session.
He was followed by Andriy Zurgalidze of Ukraine and Martin Fomin of Russia, who followed him on the medal rostrum for the second and third positions, with timings of 30.53 and 31.69 seconds, respectively. Fomin’s team-mates, Ruslan Lebedev and Ilya Lukyanov
ended their swims in a time of 31.75 and 31.86 seconds, for the fourth and fifth position, respectively.
Brasil’s Coutinho E. occupied sixth position, with a timing of 32.50 seconds. Great Britain’s Sam Chamberlain and Jack McComish surfaced as the seventh and eighth finishers, with timings of 32.78 and 33.10 seconds, respectively.
Furthermore, the session ended with several record and championship breaking efforts, while the winners were awarded with medals after the session.
