Aksana Petrushenka clinches Women’s 200m breast-stroke gold - 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships
Aksana Petrushenka of Belarus clinched the title of Women’s 200m breast-stroke meet on day two of the 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships, on Monday, August 8, in Coimbra, Portugal.
Petrushenka won the gold medal of the breast-stroke swim, by submitting a world record time of 2 minutes and 35.65 seconds. Her time was 3.96 seconds under her own world mark of 2 minutes and 39.61 seconds, made in Taipei during 2009, whereas, she also improved
her previous championship record of 2 minutes and 45.62 seconds, with a considerable improvement of 9.97 seconds.
The gold medallist was trailed by Iryna Tereshchenko of Ukraine, who was 5.48 seconds behind her and posted a time of 2 minutes and 41.13 seconds for silver medal. Moments later, Tereshchenko’s team-member, Natalya Korniyenko transpired as the bronze medallist
of the event, as she ended her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 48.32 seconds.
Petrushenka’s team-member, Natalia Deeva was the fourth fastest swimmer of the event, as she remained only 3.01 seconds behind her preceding finisher and reported in a time of 2 minutes and 51.31 seconds. Jarmila Gupta of Germany was the fifth fastest swimmer
to conclude her swim, as she was just 1.06 seconds away from overwhelming the effort of her foregoing competitor, Deeva, by producing a time of 2 minutes and 5.37 seconds.
Chuan-Ni Chen of Chinese Taipei was the sixth finest swimmer of the four-lap event, as she was 1.74 seconds slower than her former finisher and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 54.11 seconds. She was followed by Jessica Weeden of Unites States, who remained
only 0.15 seconds slower than Chen and completed her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 54.26 seconds. Meanwhile, Alena Kulikova of Russia settled as the eighth finalist to conclude her 200m swim, as she touched the finishing wall with a timing of 2 minutes and
54.95 seconds.
Petrushenka expressed happiness after winning the world title, while the championship will carry on for five more consecutive days to complete all the scheduled events.
