Al Ahly defeats Kenya Prisons in CAVB African Clubs Championship
The CAVB African Clubs Championship took place in Egypt just recently. The tournament featured various teams from the Africa as well as the Gulf state.
However, the two teams that made it to the final were the Kenya Prisons as well as the Al Ahly.
The team that emerged as victors over their rivals was Al Ahly. They were able to make a clean sweep over the Kenya Prisons. Not only did they win the match in three back to back sets, Al Ahly did so in a decisive fashion, leaving no doubt of their supremacy.
By the time that Al Ahly was celebrating their well deserved win and the Kenya Prisons were heading out of the court with heads hung low, the score board displayed the following final set scores, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-10.
Even though the Prisons lost the match disappointingly, they have been greeted and wished with good sentiments back home. The reason for such positivity stems from the fact that the Prisons are the first men’s volleyball team belonging to the sub-Saharan
region that have been able to make it to the finals of the Championship in a long time. The last time any team from the sub-Saharan region competed in the final match of the championship was in the year 1982.
The credit of such a phenomenal victory goes to the attack as well as the defence of the Al Ahly team. The offense of Al Ahly was relentless and it kept the pressure on the Prisons all through the match. The defence also worked in collaboration with the
offense and did not let any easy points go the way of the Prisons.
The start of the first set of the game saw Al Ahly take the lead early on. Once they had the lead, Al Ahly kept extending the advantage. The Prisons were hard put to close in the gap and all they could do was to trial far behind. It was only a matter of
time for Al Ahly to take the first set of the game at 25-13.
After having lost the initial set of the match, the Prisons were sent a wakeup call to respond in a competitive manner. They tried to step up their game but all they could manage was a halfhearted effort. As a result, Al Ahly also bagged the second set of
the game at 25-16.
The loss of the first two sets of the game broke the spirit of the Prisons who also ended up losing the third and final set of the game at 25-10.
Despite the several years it took for any sub-Saharan team to enter the final match, the Kenya Prisons did not last even an hour as the match finished in 54 minutes.
