Al Kazeem after robbed of a first place finish at Newbury, gears himself to take part in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at the Ascot
The Roger Charlton trained 3-year-old colt, Al Kazeem, is thrown in the mix to run in the Grosvenor Casinos Cumberland Lodge Stakes at the Ascot on 24 September, 2011.
Bred by D J and Mrs. Deer and owned by D J Deer, Al Kazeem has been slightly off target recently, rolling in second in his last two races.
However, after breaking his maiden, Al Kazeem has never finished worse than second, in his last 5 starts.
At Newbury racecourse on 17 September, 2011, in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial, Al Kazeem seemed to have bagged the race, and was headed straight for the wire, but William Haggas trained Green Destiny spoiled it for Al Kazeem.
Both runners were held up in rear in the beginning, as Al Kazeem got a slightly cleaner trip, 2 furlongs out than Green Destiny, and went on to lead from there.
With a lot of traffic to contend, Green Destiny switched sharply to the right, soon after, and raced towards middle of the course.
The 4-year-old bay gelding, Green Destiny, ran on gamely inside the final furlong to chase Al Kazeem.
In the final 120 yards Green Destiny edged out and took a narrow lead, as Al Kazeem got taken by surprise, getting caught in the last strides and losing to Green Destiny by a mere ½ length.
The son of Dubawi, out of Kazeem by Darshaan, Al Kazeem got mugged because he was left in front for too long.
It was just an amazing run by Green Destiny, hands down, that took care of the 7 challengers in emphatic style at the end of the race.
Al Kazeem’s previous race wasn’t as close as the last one, because Sea Moon gave absolutely no chance to anyone on the field in the Group 2 Voltigeur Stakes at York on 17 August, 2011, and impressively defeated Al Kazeem by a margin of 8 lengths.
By the looks of it, Al Kazeem will be headed to run in the Cumberland Lodge at the Ascot, and there shouldn’t be much to worry regarding the colt, because he ran a brilliant race in the Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial.
