Al Muhtasib went through and through to win the Buddy Dilberto Memorial at Fair Grounds
Michael Maker trained son of Distorted Humor, out of mare A.P. Interest by A.P. Indy, Al Muhtasib at Fair Grounds race course made it look terribly easy in the Buddy Dilberto Memorial after the 1 1/16 mile race was shifted from turf to the main “sloppy”
track.
The Kentucky bred 4-year-old colt posted a gate to wire victory in the 1 1/16 mile test and downed the likes of Strike Impact and Pedrolino, who finished second and third, respectively, in a field of 5, 3-year-old and above males.
Al Muhtasib jumped on to the lead right from outset and never looked back while he set moderate fractions of 24.42 seconds for the opening quarter mile, as he went 48.48 seconds for the half mile distance and finally completed the six furlong distance in
the 1 116 mile long race in 1 minute and 13.03 seconds.
Jockey Rosie Napravnik was scheduled to ride Suntracer, who was scratched from the race after finding out that it would be run over the mud rather than turf.
He picked up the mount mid-afternoon and readied himself to ride Al Muhtasib, who gave the jockey a brilliant wire to wire journey for the eight and a half furlongs distance which he covered in 1 minute and 43.63 seconds.
“He jumped out of the gate sharp today and he just relaxed and had plenty left for the lane,” Napravnik said. “I had a ton of horse the whole way. He was tugging on me waiting for me to tell him to go.”
A Muhtasib prior to the Buddy Dilberto Memorial was exiting a third place finish in the Claiming Crown Jewel held at Fair Grounds race course on 3 December, 2011, over a distance of 1 1/8 miles.
It Happened Again won the show case racing event at Fair Grounds on the venue’s initial host of the 13th Claiming Crown Jewel, as he covered the 1 1/8 mile distance in 1 minute and 51.56 seconds.
Al Muhtasib, mostly a allowance/optional claimer horse, has 4 wins under his belt for the 2011 season, and the 4-year-old finished 3rd once and sixth twice this campaign.
