Alabama Crimson Tide down Detroit Titans 62-54 - NCAA Basketball
After an outstanding 7-0 start to the NCAA Basketball 2011, Alabama Crimson Tide have somewhat lost their last week and lost two consecutive games.
However, this week, they came back strongly again and grabbed a confidence boosting 62 - 54 win against Detroit Titans, in a game played at Coleman Coliseum on Sunday Night.
Tide were professional and dominated the proceedings right from the very start until the end. Erratic shooting from the other end also helped them in staying ahead of their opponents, who looked extremely rusty tonight.
Alabama coach Anthony Grant was satisfied with the team’s overall performance and praised his players for fighting out with composure. He added
"I felt like as always it had to start for us on the defensive end, I felt like this was a very dangerous team walking into our building. We knew the challenge walking in and I thought our guys came out, especially in the first
half, with great intensity, great focus, great unselfishness."
JaMychal Green was outstanding for Tide and marshalled the team with game high 21 points including 7 for 9 from inside the arc and pulled down 6 rebounds. Tony Mitchell was also impressive with 15, whereas Nick Jacobs added 13
on 6 for 9 from the paint.
Ray McCallum paced the Titans with 13 points including 5 for 8 from the free throw line while Doug Anderson and Chase Simon had 12 and 10 points respectively.
Mitchell and Green fired right from the start and got Tide off to a 17-5 start. The one sided affair continued and with two minutes remaining Tide were in a commanding position, ahead by 22 points at 38-16. The only resistance
that came from the other end was from Chase and Eli Holiman, who were involved in a late 6 point push that saw the team go into halftime at 38-22.
Titans found some momentum in the second frame and reeled off a 13-6 opening run, capped by Chase’s free throw to bring down the lead into single digits 35-44. But, Mitchell and Green were unstoppable in the passage after that
and initiated another 13-4 run in the next few minutes to change the momentum completely, carving out a 57-39 lead.
That effectively sealed the game and although Titans bolted a 15-5 run towards the end, it was a mere consolation.
