I will be going to buy my first shotgun next week and I need two questions answered before I go. 1) Is the check done the day of my purchase or do I need to go a few days before and 2) does the check cost anything?

  1. The check is the federal background check and is "instantaneous" which means the gun shop calls for the check on you and the feds generally get back to them in 15 or 20 mins. I've had it take up to half an hour on a busy day.

The check should not cost anything extra.

  2. you should call the place you intend to purchase the weapon from in advance, different places do things different ways. dont wait until the last minute to purchase a gun for the hunt, you may find yourself dissapointed . . . besides it should be cleaned and oiled or else you risk damaging the barrel. the check will be done the day of your purchase, but if the system is down it could take up to five days in advance to recieve confirmation. they are not obligated to give you same day service . . . although it can happen . . . why push your luck?

  3. 1: The background check is done on the same day that you purchase the firearm.

2: No, the check does not cost a single penny.

  4. Same day, but in Pa. they charge you extra for the background check.*

  5. I live in Alabama...

The background check (NICS) will be done on the day the firearm is purchased.

As for the cost, it is free.  But, I have been in some gun shops that had a sign stating that if you do not pass the background check, you will be charged a fee.  Legal or not, I don't know, but I have seen the signs in some gun shops.
