Aladar Gerevich, most enduring fencing player in the history
Fencing is a famous game which is being played for numerous years. There are a lot of athletes from all over the world, who played several tournaments around the world annually. Even though fencing have been an Olympic game for a number of the years, but
still the majority of community is unknown of many famed players of this game.
Fencing is a fascinating game which has been liked by lot of community. Iron Maiden was a singer, but in his younger age he was a very high standard fencer, but he opt singing as his career. Even Madonna also liked this sport and she acted as fencer in a
James Bond movie. Neil Diamond was a singer, but he was the fencing specialist. He started his fencing career from his early school and he got fencing scholarship to New York University and obviously he was the National fencing Champion. Here are some fencers,
who showed excellent performance in fencing game and set up their recognition in history.
Aladar Gerevich, most enduring fencing player of Hungary, Who won one gold and bronze and one silver medal in sabre individual and one bronze medal in foil individual. Gerevich also has an honour to win six gold medals in sabre team in six Olympics.
Gerevich won gold medals in sabre team in 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960 Olympics. In the 1936’s Sabre Individual competition in Berlin, he won bronze medal. He also got victory in getting a gold medal in 1948 Sabre Individual competition in London.
He earned a bronze medal in Foil Individual game in Helsinki, Finland.
He was known as one of the supreme fencing player in sabre. He won a lot of world championships for the Team and three times in Individual. In 1960, when trials were being taken for Rome Olympics, the fencing committee stated that Gerevich was too old to
compete in the Olympics. He challenged the entire sabre team to have individual matches and defeated everybody. He took active part to win gold medal for his sabre team in 1960 Olympics. He died at the age of 81 in Budapest, Hungary.
One of the other most popular and greatest Olympic fighters in United States was Albert Axelrod. He was American foil fencer. Before Meinhardt won the bronze medal in 2010 fencing world championship, Axelrod was the only foil fencer from America, who could
reach to world championship individual finals. He was ranked World Number One in the United States ranking in 1955, 1958, 1960 and 1970, and Number Two, nine times in his life. Axelrod is the only person, who was ranked in the United States' top-ten list for
22 years with a three -year gap in the mid due to his services for military.
In Pan American Games, he won three silver medals in foil individual in 1955, 1959, 1963, and 1967, silver for foil team in 1955 and 1967 and three gold medals in foil team in 1951, 1959 and 1963. In 1960’s Rome Olympics he won bronze in foil individual.
He was the member of five United States Olympic teams through 1950’s and 1960’s. In United States championships he won the National Foil team championship five times (1940, 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1958).
Axelrod had a forceful and straight-ahead offensive technique which gave his opponents a very tough time to compete. He remained the Editor of 'American Fencing' magazine from 1986 to 1990 also. He was introduced into the International Jewish Sports Hall
of Fame in 1973 and 1974 in USFA Hall of Fame.
