Alain Bernard fails to qualify for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships – Swimming News
The 2008 Beijing Olympic champion, Alain Bernard, will not be able to defend his title at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships in July, as he has failed to qualify in the 100m freestyle event on the third day of the French Long Course Nationals, in Strasbourg.
Fabien Gilot won the 100m freestyle in a time of 48.34 seconds, while William Meynard and Yannick Agnel touched the wall in a time of 48.57 and 48.59 seconds, respectively. Their timing was well ahead of Bernard’s 48.71 seconds. Gilot was the only one in
the race to register a swim of less than 23.00 seconds in the first lap, as he posted a time of 22.73 seconds.
In the Women’s 1500m freestyle, Lotte Friis won the gold medal in a time of 6:06.74 minutes ahead of the Kristel Kobrich and Aurelie Muller, who stepped on the podium for the silver and bronze medals in a time of 6:16.73 and 6:27.77 minutes, respectively.
Friis, who won the silver medal at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, has now climbed up to the second spot in the world’s early fastest rankings for 2011, as Great Britain’s Keri Anne Payne clocked a time of 6:06.67 minutes at the 2011 British Gas Swimming
Championships.
In the Men’s 800m freestyle, Sebastien Rouault clocked a wonderful time of 7:54.95 minutes that placed him far ahead of the Sebastien Fraysse and Damien Joly, who touched the wall in a time of 8:03.01 and 8:03.69 minutes, respectively.
In the Women’s 100m backstroke, the defending champion, Alexianne Castel, won the event in an astonishing time of 1:01.36 minutes that placed her prominently ahead of her rival, Cloe Credeville, who touched home for the second spot in a time of 1:02.07 minutes.
Hazal Sarikaya out-touched Alexandra Putra for the third spot in a time of 1:02.58 minutes.
Later on, Benjamin Stasiulis won the French title for the Men’s 200m backstroke in a superb time of 1:57.27 minutes ahead of Camille Lacourt and Joris Hustache, who touched the wall in a time of 1:59.74 and 2:00.26 minutes, respectively.
The last event was the Women’s 50m freestyle, where Inge Dekker won the gold medal in a fantastic time of 24.87 seconds and was followed by Angela Tavernier and Beryl Gastaldello for the second and third spot in a time of 25.91 and 25.99 seconds, respectively.
