Alain Prost backs Sebastian Vettel for fourth straight title – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 champion Alain Prost believes that Red Bull’s driver Sebastian Vettel will once again be a strong contender for the drivers’ championship in the 2013 season. However, he
hopes that the championship fight goes right till the final race, just like it happened last time around.
The young German has won three back to back world titles and will definitely be in a strong position this year too. Since there have been no major changes in the rules and regulations, all
of the teams will be in a similar position to what they were at the end of the 2012 season.
Considering the performances last year, it can be easily stated that Red Bull will be in a strong position with other teams such as McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus also fighting for victories
with consistency.
Commenting on the entire situation, Prost said, “He (Vettel) is still the favourite. Behind him, it's hard to say ... It could be a very even field, we'll see some good races. Alonso could
be the most dangerous behind Vettel and why not an outsider like Raikkonen or Grosjean?”
It is interesting to notice that the former great did not mention Lewis Hamilton amongst the title contenders for this year’s championship. The reason is that the British driver will not
be racing for McLaren this year, as he has signed a new contract with Mercedes.
Prost does not rate the German squad as one of the top teams at the moment and said, “Mercedes will not be challenging for the title, I don't think so. There's a little question mark over
Mercedes, we still don't know their level. They were a long way away at the end of last season so I don't see them suddenly returning to the front. But they will be up there at certain tracks.”
However, some of the top drivers believe that Hamilton can turn the tables for Mercedes and the team might possible pose a serious threat this year. This will only be possible if the German
giants find a solution to their tyre wear situation otherwise they will be unable to challenge for victories.
