Alain Prost says F1 seems ‘absolutely impossible’ for new teams – Formula 1 news
Alain Prost says that it is quite impossible for the new teams to be successful in Formula 1 and break the dominance of the top five teams.
Prost believes that is very hard to be on the pace and break into the new teams while he was referring to Marussia, Caterham and Hispania Racing Team which were attracted towards F1 after the departure of BMW, Honda and Toyota but remained unsuccessful to
score a point in their first two seasons.
Moreover, four times world drivers’ champion, Prost set up his own team as well after buying out Ligier in 1997. The team finished sixth in the constructors’ championship and secured two podiums in its first season but failed to perform well in the next
four seasons and eventually went out of action due to financial and political problems in 2001.
“I will say quite frankly that they cannot become competitive in today's Formula One,” Prost told F1News. “It's impossible. They can make some progress, but - of course - you must immediately put the question 'What goals do they pursue?' To break into the
top five with a new team like this in formula one - it is absolutely impossible.”
Prost said that the top teams have huge budgets to spend and they have a large number of sponsors for their support. However, it is impossible for the lower budget new teams with almost no sponsors for their financial support to fight with the ever strongest
contenders in the sport which ultimately results in the disappearance of the teams after couple of seasons.
However, Prost said that he tried to get more sponsors for Williams during the winter after he expressed that it is not just the new teams who are struggling in F1 in present time.
“I talk often with Frank Williams, and this winter I even tried to help find him some sponsors, but failed. It's difficult for them as when you get yourself into financial problems, it's so hard to get out of them,” said Prost.
There is no doubt that skills of the driver and the overall efforts of the team are essential for the team’s success. However, Prost felt that financial support is crucial for the very existence of the team.
