Alan Ashby likely to be added to the Houston Astros Broadcast Team- MLB News
The Houston Astros are set to make their first move in the broadcast team this season that involves hiring a team member rather than letting one go and are said to be interested in their former catcher, Alan Ashby. With their all new look ready for the 2013
season; Houston will consist of almost all new voices in the broadcast team as well.
The Houston ball club recently did not renew contracts of play-by-play voices Dave Raymond and Brett Dolan and Jim Deshaies opted to accept an offer to be part of the Chicago Cubs team. Milo Hamilton, their veteran broadcaster, also hung his shoes at the
end of 2012 season after 25 years of service.
61-year-old Alan Ashby had a baseball career in the Majors that spanned over 17 years. He was a part of the Astros for 11 of them between 1979 and 1989 and performed quite well for the club.
He was recently named as a catcher on the Astros all time All-Star team which was announced as a part of the team’s 50th anniversary. He has also been inducted to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.
George Postolos, president of the Astros, did not confirm reports and did not name any candidates that were in the running of joining the broadcast team that currently has only Bill Brown on it.
He did acknowledge that the candidates have strong ties with the franchise and all are talented in the field of broadcasting. Gorge believes that they will end up with some good names in the box from the current candidates.
"We've been really pleased with the response from candidates," Postolos said. "There's a lot of interest in the position and we have a number of candidates with very strong connections to the franchise that also have great talent as broadcasters, and that's
exciting. We think we'll end up with a good outcome for the Astros franchise, which is our desire and objective."
Alan has been an experienced broadcaster who has been recently working with Toronto Blue Jays. His stint in Toronto started back in 2007. He has been previously associated with the Astros broadcast team and was a part of them from 1998 to 2006 and worked
alongside the recently retired Milo Hamilton.
Ashby has interviewed with the club for one of the few vacant spots including the television analyst spot as well as color analyst and play-by-play commentator on the radio.
Alan Ashby is an experienced broadcaster and has been a part of the Astros as a player and broadcaster for quite a bit of time in the past. He still maintains his residence in Houston. With his knowledge of the game and the Houston ball club, Alan will certainly
be a local favourite and a very good addition to the broadcast team.
