Alan Hopper warns Abner Mares against Joseph Agbeko – Boxing news
Don King Promotions’ Vice President of Public Relations, Alan Hopper, has warned the undefeated Mexican pugilist and World Boxing Council’s Silver 118-pound Champion, Abner Mares, ahead of his mega showdown against the current International Boxing Federation’s
Bantamweight world champion, Joseph Agbeko.
The Ghanaian pugilist, Agbeko, is set to make his title defence against Mares in the Bantamweight Tournament Final this Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and Hopper believes it will be a very tough night
for the Mexican.
Hopper in Mares-Agbeko final pre-fight press conference last Thursday warned Mares by telling him what Ghanaian warriors are like.
Hopper told Mares to ask Oscar De La Hoya about the Bazooka, Ike Quartey, whose best weapon was his jab, which was considered to be one of the best in boxing while he was in his prime.
The 41-year-old, Quartey, who won 37 of his 42 (1 Draw) professional fights, with 31 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, knocked down De La Hoya during the fight before eventually losing the bout via close split decision.
Therefore, Hopper reckons Mares should know what Ghanaian combatants are like.
Hopper remarked, “This is for Abner Mares: If you want to know what I mean by this, just ask the head of your promotional company, Oscar De La Hoya about a fighter from Ghana by the name of Ike “Bazooka” Quartey. He knocked Oscar on his tail -- but to Oscar's
credit he got up and knocked him on his butt and flurried at the end to win the fight. But he can tell you what it's like to be in the ring with a warrior from Ghana. IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko is one of these warriors.”
In the end however Hopper wished Mares all the very best for his match against Agbeko.
“I say this so you know what you are up against, Abner,” Hopper added.
There is hardly a day left when both these warriors will be live in action. Let’s see if Mares can keep protect his unbeaten record against the dangerous Agbeko.
