Alan Jones supports his Aussie countryman, Mark Webber
The former Formula One World Champion, Alan Jones has come forward to support the tough guy, Mark Webber as he fights two very tough rivals to bag his first Formula One world championship.
The last race of the 2010 season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is scheduled to take place this Sunday at Yas Marina Circuit. After a very exhilarating and suspense filled season, finally the world is to see a champion whose battle would be remembered for long.
The stress and pressure this year has offered to the top drivers and the thrill and excitement savoured by the race fans is unmatched to any other season in the sports’ 60 years’ history.
Currently the battle is tightly twined around the Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso, Webber and the other Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel. The McLaren driver, Lewis Hamilton, although seems to be almost out of the tug, however, the determined driver is far
from giving up making the last round a battle for the very determined and skilled drivers.
In such a situation Jones, the last Australian Formula One driver who got the crown of the world championship 30 years back, came forward to support his fellow countryman. Webber, not only suffers from the mental stress of the tough battle which he is fighting
for the first time in his career, but also has expressed a lesser emotional and psychological support from his team in such a critical situation. Only last week, the driver very vividly told some of the journalists that the team, although practically favours
both the drivers equally, yet they are emotionally more inclined towards Vettel.
In such a grave situation, the 1980’s world champion offered massive support to the driver, telling that the entire country wishes to see him bring home the title after 3 decades.
Presently, Webber stands at second place in the charts, following the Ferrari driver, Alonso who has a lead of eight points. On the other, Webber still has a 15-points cushion over his teammate Vettel.
While talking to the press this Friday, the old Williams driver said, "I'm backing Mark to do it and no one will be more pleased than me after waiting 30 years. If it gets down to a bit of a head-game I'll back Mark every time. He has come up the hard way
in uncompetitive cars whereas the other two are a little bit precious and more likely to throw a tantrum.”
He further told that some of the rivals of Webber have only been luckier than him and entered the series in good teams. This is why they never really had to struggle as hard as the 34-year-old did over the years.
While commenting on the rivalry of the Red Bull twosome, Jones said that there are very few men in the sport who are brave enough to speak their heart and Webber is one of them. He continued telling that most of the drivers, whether they like a circuit or
they don't like, they would only tell that it is brilliant. The old man believes that it needs a lot of guts for a driver to say that the team might not be very happy to see him winning.
However, the old Australian driver, who currently hosts a radio show as well, admired the Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz saying that he has been very fair with both the drivers and has kept his words of not following team orders.
The old Aussie legend furthermore stated, "I lived in England when I became champion so I think a lot of people over there will support Mark. And given the choice between a Spaniard or a bloody German, the Poms would rather have an Aussie.”
