Alan Saulo and Carlos Munoz advance to Round 4 at ASP 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco
Brazil’s Alan Saulo and Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz advanced through into the fourth round (Round of 32) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after walking away with top honours from their respective Round
3 (Round of 64) heats that went down at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco, Mexico, on Friday, July 20.
Chile’s Manuel Selman finished in runner-up place in the 11th place to accompany Saulo into the next round, while America’s Johnny Norris and Hawaii’s Nathan Carvalho rounded out the bottom-two position, which resulted in the addition of their
names to the elimination list.
The 12th heat saw America’s Taylor Clark finished behind Munoz in second place to advance through into Round 4. His fellow countryperson Fisher Heverly and Colt Ward finished in third and fourth place respectively, which led to their elimination
from the competition.
Mother Nature continued to hold back her generosity on the latest day of the competition, forcing the surfers to once again make the most of the two-to-four foot waves in off-shore conditions. With not enough potent scoring opportunities on offer, the local
and international field of young surfing talent indeed had their work cut out for them.
The 11th heat saw Saulo take on Selman, Norris and Carvalho in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot. All four surfers had done quite well to remain alive in contention for the event title so far despite encountering demanding surfing conditions,
but their work was far from done yet.
As the battle got underway, Saulo made himself quite prominent through his determined performance and eventually managed to register a couple of decent scores to reach a heat-total of 11.50 points. The score proved sufficient enough to earn him top honours,
consequently taking him through into the next round.
Selman struggled to find his rhythm throughout the course of the battle, but managed to secure runner-up place with a modest heat-total of 8.84 points, thus making the Round 4 cut as well.
Norris and Carvalho finished with a heat-total of 7.40 and 7.30 points respectively, which made their discomfort in the waves quite apparent.
The next heat saw Munoz get the better of Clark, Heverly and Ward with a combined wave-total of 9.70 points, which held up until the end to see him through to victory.
Clark finished in second place with a heat-total of 8.50 points, which served to secure his place in the fourth round.
Heverly finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.03 points, while Ward apparently succumbed to the conditions completely and only got to a heat-total of 3.67 points.
The intense surfing action continued at Playa Revolcadero with the remaining Round 3 heats of ASP 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco on Friday.
