Alan Shearer tips Harry Redknapp for England role
Former England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has backed Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp to be the next England manager, once Fabio Capello leaves the role. Shearer told the Daily Telegraph: "Harry would
be a great England manager."
The BBC pundit went on to state how he thought Capello’s stubbornness and inability to listen to his players led to an unsettled dressing room, which in turn, led to the horrendous World Cup debacle the
country endured this summer. "We qualified in spectacular style for the World Cup but it was a disaster. I kept saying on television, 'there's something drastically wrong in the dressing room because we're not seeing the players we see in the Premier League'.
John Terry tried to get a message out, get something out into the open, to clear the air and move forward. His motives were right: he could see big problems, that something was going to come crashing down,” the Newcastle legend explained.
"Capello should know the players and what they want. If he doesn't it's up to somebody else to have a word. If the manager didn't listen, then that's his prerogative as manager and it backfired spectacularly.
I cannot remember so many poor performances,” Shearer continued.
The former Southampton and Blackburn striker went on to claim that Redknapp’s motivational and man-management style would’ve been beneficial to the side, in stark contrast to Capello’s strict approach.
"At that level, it's about knitting them into a solid group and making them go out and play in a certain system. Harry would do a great job at that,” Shearer said.
With England still seemingly struggling for form, following Tuesday’s woeful goalless draw with Montenegro, the change of manager may even come sooner than expected. Capello has already declared that he
will step down following the European Championships in 2012, but Redknapp may well get his chance before then if performances don’t pick up.
