The waters in Alaska are less contaminated than other waters and the fish found in Alaskan waters are also less contaminated (very very low mercury levels, etc.)...Why are the fish in Alaska less contaminated?..I don't really get it...Yes, the water is less contaminated and that's probably why the fish are less contaminated, but why is the water in Alaska less contaminated than other waters?

  1. There are virtual no industrial centers in the area which might pour their wastes into the water.  The only way they could be contaminated is by oil spills, less common than i would have thought.  Pollution from ships in the area is negligible.  Most ships in the area are there for fishing.

  2. Alaskas water is less used.

  3. Alaska is a HUGE state comparable in size to California, Montana, and Texas combined.  Including the shorelines of its many islands, it has more miles of ocean-front property than the continental United States.  Alaska has parks that are bigger than some states.  Bigger even than MANY countries in other parts of the world.  And yet, Alaska has a total population considerably smaller than most of the larger cities in the U.S.A.  The largest city in Alaska {Anchorage) is less than a third the size of San Jose, California by comparison with about 300,000 people living in or around it.  After that, the other cities drop off quickly in size.  As a result, you have less manufacturing and industrial waste, pollution, and by-products entering the air or the water.  In fact, many of the 3,000+ rivers and tens of thousands of lakes are rarely used by more than a few people at any given time, and some hardly ever and even never.  No people = NO pollution.  Therefore.......MUCH cleaner environment including air and water.  But don't take my word for it.  Come and see it yourself.  It's beautiful!
