Alastair Cook all set to become England’s next One Day skipper - Cricket news
The English cricket team is ready to appoint their new skipper in the fifty over format of the game in place of former skipper Andrew Strauss who has decided to retire from One-Day cricket to prolong his career in Test cricket.
Alastair’s appointment is likely to face criticism from a few quarters as there is a question mark on his attitude towards the fifty-over game. Nonetheless, Cook was long believed to be Strauss’s successor and the most deserving person for the job.
England’s team director, Andy Flower, however, believes that the 26-year-old Cook should not be judged and needs to be given a chance to prove his leadership. Flower believes that Cook has the capability to lead the English side and is a perfect fit for
the role.
England’s batting coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-c60529 Gooch, has also come out in support of the young batsman and has expressed his full trust in his ability to play for England as the captain of the team. Talking about the possible appointment of Cook as the next captain, he
said, "Good players have a habit of adapting and of finding a way, and Alastair is a very good player."
Cook played phenomenally well for England during last year’s Ashes series where he batted superbly against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 by scoring 766 runs.
With Cook’s appointment, England for the first time in their cricket history will have three different skippers in the three formats of the game. However, the future of Twenty20 skipper Collingwood is also hanging in limbo because of his poor performance
in recent months. It will be interesting to see if England sees a new captain in the Twenty20 format as well.
However, Strauss was not removed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) because they wanted the left-handed opening batsman to carry on but the skipper requested some time to think over his future as he clearly wanted to quit playing the One-Day game.
After Strauss made his decision final, he was not pushed by the team director and team managing director, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hugh-Morris-c63550, to continue with his captaincy. Instead they took the right decision and expressed support for Cook to be named as the next ODI skipper
of England
Strauss’s retirement has come after Australia’s Ricky Ponting, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and South Africa’s Graeme Smith relinquished their captaincies after their teams were eliminated from the ICC World Cup 2011.
