Alastair Cook backs Jonny Bairstow to come back good in future – Cricket News Update
England’s One Day International skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026 on Monday backed struggling teammate Jonny Bairstow to emerge as a successful Test batsman, in the long run.
"For Jonny it is tough because he has had a couple of innings and people are judging him already. That's the difference between international cricket and county cricket," said Alastair Cook during a media encounter after a practice session ahead of
the opening Test against South Africa.
"I've seen him a couple of times in county cricket and he was comfortably the best player on the Yorkshire team. He was the stand-out player. I'm sure he'll be fine. In his mind he might have some doubts. I haven't seen him play enough of the short-pitch
bowling."
The 22-year-old inexperienced Jonny Bairstow, who replaced injured http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, has been recently overlooked for the South African assignment, following an unimpressive show against the Windies. In his
four innings during the 2-0 Test series whitewash of the Caribbean side, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867 man could manage only 38 runs, while playing at number six, and was found particularly vulnerable against short-pitched deliveries.
The right-handed top-order batsman also failed to score runs in the county cricket, managing only six runs from his last three innings for Yorkshire.
Meanwhile, Ravi Bopara, who has rarely looked convincing during his 12 test international career, shone with the bat in the recent ODI series against West Indies and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, scoring two half centuries against the kangaroos
(at Kennington Oval and Old Trafford), and one against the Windies, in the one-off T20 International at Nottingham.
The 27-year-old middle-order batsman, who can also bowl medium pace, banked an impressive return for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northamptonshire-c824, at Northampton.
The three-Test series between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 gets underway at The Oval, on Thursday, July 19, 2012, and will be followed by games at Headingley and Lord’s. An England series defeat would allow the Proteas to move to the top of
the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Test rankings, something they have been chasing since the start of this year, with weather hampering their move every time.
