Alastair Cook lauds ‘death overs’ duo of Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach – Cricket News Update
The One-Day captain of England, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026, on Sunday hailed Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach for their clinical performance in the death overs of India’s innings during the washed out One Day International at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
Cook believes the duo has the potential of taking England a long way in One-Day cricket.
"I thought we bowled very well in the second half of that 50 overs, especially in the batting powerplay towards the death," said Cook while talking to media reporters on Sunday.
"I thought Jade and Bressie bowled well because at one stage we could have been looking at a score of over 300,” he added further.
Both Dernbach and Bresnan had been quite expensive in the start but returned to share three wickets in the later stages of the Indian innings, to restrict the tourists to 274 for 8 in their allocated quota of 50 overs.
Cook agreed that bowling in the death overs, specially in the powerplays was an area of concern for England; however, he said that with the duo of Dernbach and Bresnan around, they are making progress in those areas as well.
"The final overs and powerplays was certainly a big area of our game which we needed to improve,” conceded the opening batsman of England.
"We're making steps of progress in that area. That's what we need to do to be more consistent in challenging the best teams," he added further.
Cook, the double centurion and the Man of the Match of the Edgbaston Test singled out Dernbach for praise.
"He (Dernbach) is outstanding at the moment," said Cook, adding, "He's certainly got a huge amount of work to do, like we all do, but it's very encouraging."
Dernbach's slow deliveries and wide number of variations have helped him impress the selectors and his captain since his debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s success in the only T20 against India last week.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TT-Bresnan-c2711 on the other hand, has proven himself in all the three formats of the game.
The second One Day between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 and England will be played at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday, September 6.
