Albano Olivetti stuns Matthias Bachinger in the first round clash – 2012 Open 13
Ranked at number 388 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Albano Olivetti produced a stunning result in the opening round of the Open 13 on Tuesday by defeating the world number 92, Matthias Bachinger, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The 20-year-old local qualifier pleased his home crowd with a eye startling display of quality tennis to make a place in the round of 16 at the ATP World Tour 250 event in Marseille, France.
Unseeded Bachinger hung in the contest for merely 67 minutes before submitting to the French youngster in a dismal manner. He closely followed Olivetti in all segments of the game but the superior game play of the French kept him in the lead throughout the
competition. Bachinger’s inability to register break points proved to be extremely lethal for him and his opponent nailed two out of five serve breaks to take the better of him in the end.
Olivetti fired nine thudding aces while delivering 64 per cent of his first serve on target. He dropped just six points on his first serve, bagging 30 out of 36 points en route to victory. He was off to a steady start, keeping his basics right and not allowing
Bachinger to formulate any opportunity in the game. He held his serve throughout the opener and took the scores to 5-4, with the German serving to stay in the set. Olivetti shifted his gears in the 10th game and crafted the first break opportunity
of the day to earn a set point. He was denied by a Bachinger at first but the French converted his second chance to seal the set at 6-4.
With momentum swing on his side, Olivetti was off to a flying start in the second set as well. Bachinger fought three deuces before dropping his serve in the second game, letting his opponent 2-0 up early in the set. The superior-ranked German failed to
recover from the early damage done by the break point conversion and eventually submitted the set to Olivetti at 3-6, letting the youngster into the second round of the Open 13 in style.
A huge challenge awaits Olivetti in the round of 16, as he will face off against the world number eight, Mardy Fish of the United States, for a place in the quarter-finals. Being the second seed in the draw, Fish received a bye to the second round and will
start his campaign against Olivetti on Thursday.
