I was just wondering if anyone had any idea of how long a run-up does an Albatross need to take off?

  1. Interesting question.  Apparently some albatrosses cannot take off from flat land at all, nor sustain steady flapping flight, because of their heavy wing loading; others prefer to take off from an elevated spot or at least downhill and upwind.

Royal albatross require a "long running start."  http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/si...

The only actual distance that I found was "sometimes 100 yards" from a 1955 paper by Gibson and Sefton (journal cite Emu 55:44-48.  But note:  I was unable to access the original journal paper.)

Maybe this will help you anyway.
