Albert Costa hinting a comeback from Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer in the Davis Cup – Tennis News
Albert Costa, Spain’s ex-Davis Cup team captain, has hinted about a comeback from the top two performers of Spain, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. He stated that these two players are planning on making a return to the squad in
the coming stages of the tournaments.
Spain won the last edition of Davis Cup by ousting the Argentine squad in the final round at their home soil. World number two, Rafael Nadal, and Spanish number two, David Ferrer, were part of the team that squashed a versatile
and talented Argentine squad. On the triumph, all four players and the team captain said goodbye to the Davis Cup for at-least a year but the-then captain of the team, Costa, has pointed that there is a possibility that top two Spanish tennis aces can play
in this year’s Davis Cup as well.
He said, “I know that they are considering. I know that they are players that have always been committed to the team and if they can, at some point play.” The confusion lies in giving whether to test the likes of young guns that
are the future of Spain against those players that have already made a name in the world of tennis.
This might be adjacent to putting the title on the stake as well but if the Serbian, Novak Djokovic, gets a tie with the Spanish squad, Nadal will definitely make a return to have a revenge of seven back-to-back losses. Costa added
that it was fairly close the last they met (talking about a six-hour marathon grand finale of the Australian Open 2012).
It might be dangerous to take on another responsibility, considering that the tennis schedule for Top-10 performers is very hectic throughout the year. They played the semi-final and final stages of the most of the tournament and
have long tours that feature off-court performances as well. It will be very harsh on Nadal and Ferrer, if they are called upon for the Davis Cup duty against their will. Otherwise, if they want to end their personal grudge with someone through this medium,
they should be allowed at any cost.
If Nadal and Ferrer makes a return to the Davis Cup squad, they might put aside the young talent that are fuming with confidence to perform for their country. On the other hand, local crowd will love to see their best players in
action. There is a conflict of interest but the decision has to be made by the Spanish Tennis Federation and the players.
