Albert Costa resigns as the Spanish Davis Cup team captain – Tennis News
Albert Costa, Spanish Davis Cup captain has eventually decided to step down as the captain of the team and make way for some other individual after serving his country for three years. He now moves on to a higher post, overseer
of all country’s national teams. He was a great leader and proudly left the job with a Davis Cup title triumph earlier this month.
In his professional career, he won the French Open title and after retiring from professional tennis joined in the sport with the duties as the coach and captain on separate occasions. During his three year stay as the Davis Cup
captain, Spain won two Davis Cup titles in three years and that’s a majestic result for any team captain to have under his belt.
Although Spain has been the toughest competitor with world’s top performers being the part of the team throughout the campaign, still there is always a need of leader that co-ordinates the stuff and does the homework for the players
that eases their nerves. He was always the one that came up with the slightest of shortcomings of opponents and apprised them to his team so that they can capitalize on that and clinch some crucial points.
Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco were the participants this year and they made no mistake in winning the title and naming Spain, the Davis Cup champion for the record fifth time in the history of
this tournament.
Costa was scheduled to see the president of Spanish Tennis Federation, José Luis Escañuela, for a meeting that was to be conducted in Barcelona. The decision was made that Costa will leave the post as the captain and will take
on the charge as the overseer of all country’s national teams.
Talking about his resignation and his regime as the Davis Cup captain, Costa said, “"I am proud to have the confidence of the RFET in this new stage of my professional links with the organisation that runs Spanish tennis."
President of Spanish Tennis Federation also praised the work of Costa and proclaimed, “It is great news for Spanish tennis to know that Costa, after three exceptional years in the Davis Cup, is from now co-ordinating and working
on the strategies of our men's and women's national teams.”
The place of the Davis Cup captain still remains empty and the decision will soon be finalized so that’s the preparation for the next year tie against Kazakhstan can be started.
