Albert Montanes prevailed over Bernard Tomic in the second round – Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2012
World number 69, Albert Montanes of Spain, made full use of the home conditions, as he upset 15th seed, Bernard Tomic of Australia, in straight sets 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 in the second round at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
on Wednesday.
Montanes humiliated the Australian in the opening set, as he did not allow the youngster to win even a single game till the end, breaking him three times to capture it 6-0.
The Spaniard smacked one ace and 50 percent of the first serves, converting five of the seven of them into points in the opener. The 5ft 9in tall was flawless on the second deliveries, as he did not lose even a single point, pocketing
all seven of them.
Tomic made a good start in the second set, snatching a break in the second game to grab a 2-0 advantage but Montanes responded immediately to equalise the score at 2-2. The Australian and Montanes won their serve in the next six
games to take it to 5-5. Tomic grabbed two in a row after that, sealing it 7-5.
He maintained first serve percentage of 73, claiming 18 of the 24 points on them in the second set. The 6ft 5in tall saved two of the three break points he faced and converted two of the four he received.
Tomic could not capitalise on the winning momentum, as he lost opening two games of the decider to trail 0-2. The Australian, however, bounced back to break back and level the score at 3-3. Montanes struck again in the 11th
game and saved six consecutive break points on his following serve to hold it and win the final set 7-5.
The Spaniard neither hit an ace nor committed any double fault, delivering 62 percent of the first serves and converting 18 of the 34 of them into points in the decider.
It took Tomic two hours and 19 minutes to come out victorious from a close match.
The Spaniard will meet the winner of third seed, David Ferrer; and world number 789, Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, in the round of 16.
