Albert Pujols RBI helps St. Louis Cardinals beat San Diego Padres 3-1 – MLB Update
Albert Pujols’ homer brought St. Louis Cardinals a 3-1 victory against San Diego Padres at Petco Park, San Diego on Monday night, May 23.
The Cardinals have won seven out of last eight games they have played.
Pujols hit almost overshadowed Kyle Lohse eight inning feat in which he only allowed one run and five hits, holding the Padres successfully.
Although there apparently seemed a drought of homers for Pujols, having no satisfactory performance in last 103 at-bats, he hit at a crucial time, winning himself and his team glory. Pujols’ accomplishment did not go unrecognised as the team manager expressed
his view on the player with sheer confidence.
"One run," manager Tony La Russa said. "You know what had more value? It's the worst ball he hit. You watch, he's making contact like that. He might not have the first 10 days of the season. After that he's made contact. He just keeps hitting it hard. They're
pitching him like he's hitting .350, so every at-bat's a tough one for him."
Lohse made a wonderful start on Monday by pitching a scoreless first inning. Giving up no hit, he gradually increased pressure on the San Diego offence which has been struggling hard to prove their efficacy for quite a while now.
Dustin Moseley, Lohse’s rival on Monday, was equally good with his fastballs. However, Pujols found an opportunity in him to break the run drought. Pujols homered to left to give 1-0 lead to Cardinals in the sixth inning. Lohse, on the other hand kept coming
up with a variety of pitches to limit the Padres’ offence.
Jorge Cantu hit a sacrifice fly to right in the seventh inning to level the score for the Padres. Lohse gave up two hits in the inning following which Mike Adams pitched a scoreless inning against Cardinals.
Cardinals brought the result in their favour in the ninth inning when both Daniel Descalso and Ryan Theriot scored a single each to give a 3-1 lead to their team.
Brian Tallet successfully defended the lead in the ninth inning and gave up only one hit to pave the way for a 3-1 victory for St. Louis Cardinals against San Diego Padres.
