Albert Pujols’ double RBIs help St. Louis Cardinals defeat Houston Astros 3-1 - MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman, Albert Pujols was impressive with his bat as he went 2-for-4 with an average of .277 and scored one run with two RBIs in the Cardinals’ 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 26.
The Cardinals’ batters gave their team a 2-0 lead in the very first inning by scoring two runs. Pujols struck a two-run homer (419 feet) towards centre-field and Jon Jay added one run for the Cardinals. In the second inning, Clint Barmes singled off centre-field
but Chris Johnson grounded out to second base and Brett Myers grounded out towards the pitcher.
Similarly, the Cardinals also looked powerless at the bottom of the second inning as Colby Rasmus drove a single-run shot towards centre-field but got out at second base when Yadier Molina hit a grounder into double play and Jake Westbrook struck-out looking.
Carlos Lee singled off right-field and Michael Bourn posted the first run for the Astros during the third inning to reduce their lead 2-1. In the fourth and fifth inning, the pitchers were on top due to their extraordinary pitches. Westbrook pitched his
six innings with an ERA of 4.86 and gave up only one run on seven hits, including one walk. He permitted just one earned run and had three strike-outs on his 97 pitches.
Cardinals increased their lead to 3-1 during the sixth inning when David Freese hit a one-run homer (376 feet) towards right-field. The last three innings passed without score as the batters struggled on the amazing throws of the pitchers.
Pujols commented on the game and said, “I think that's their job when you have a call like that. They go inside and have a better view. If it wouldn't have been a home run they would have (changed) the call. I thought it hit the concrete off the pad.”
In the eighth inning, the Astros’ first baseman Brett Wallace grounded out to third base, Johnson grounded out to short-stop and Barmes also grounded out to short-stop position. The Astros missed the scoring opportunities in the ninth inning when Bourn walked
but Jason Michaels struck-out looking and Matt Downs struck-out swinging.
After having a decent win, the Cardinals got a 2-0 lead in the four-game series at St. Louis.
