Albert Pujols sparks as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Cincinnati Reds 4-1 - MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman, Albert Pujols had a remarkable day with his bat as he went 1-for-4 but hit three RBIs with a solo homer in the Cardinals’ 4-1 victory against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati on July 16.
First two innings for both teams passed without any score as the batters were unable to take any run. At the top of the first, Daniel Descalso popped out to third base and Jon Jay got out at second base without giving an initial run to the Cardinals. Similarly,
Joey Votto walked but Brandon Phillips was struck-out looking and Jay Bruce grounded out to first base at the bottom of the first inning.
Scott Rolen flied out to centre-field and Chris Heisey grounded out to short-stop position during the second inning without posting any run on the score-board. Finally, the Red’ batters opened their scoring account at the bottom of the third inning and took
a 1-0 lead when Votto singled off left-field and Drew Stubbs added one run to their score-card. Edgar Renteria moved to second base at the end of the third inning.
During the fourth inning, the pitchers stopped the runs of the batters. The Cardinals’ starter, Chris Carpenter had an outstanding day with the ball as he pitched eight innings with an ERA of 3.69 and allowed just one run on seven hits with one earned run.
He walked three and struck-out seven batters on his 116 pitches.
Carpenter stated his excitement and said, “I just get excited when I go out there. It's a competitive game. They're a quality club. I was able to make a pitch to get out of that jam.”
The Cardinals’ batters got a 3-1 lead during the fifth inning. Pujols struck a three-run homer (386 feet) towards left-field while Skip Schumaker and Jay both contributed two runs to give the Cardinals a solid foundation. In the sixth inning, the score-board
stayed empty.
In the seventh inning, the Cardinals advanced their lead 4-1 by scoring one run. Jay singled to centre-field and Schumaker posted the final run of the game. With this credible win, the Cardinals levelled the three-game series 1-1 at Cincinnati.
