Albert Pujols sparks as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Milwaukee Brewers 12-3 in Game 2 of NLCS
Albert Pujols had 4-for-5 in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Monday, October 10 to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-3. Considered to be their stranglehold, the Brewers could not make use of their home ground
at Miller Park and fell to the resurgent St. Louis Cardinals.
Pujols had three doubles and five RBIs in the 4-for-5 that included a home-run demolishing the Brewers’ defence. The win came at a time when the Brewers won Game 1 of the best-of-seven series 9-6.
"You learn from the mistakes that you made," Pujols said. "Yesterday was just so tough. Going to bed, I was just thinking about some of the opportunities I had to help our ballclub win."
Pujols took almost every pitcher that came his way. From Shaun Marcum, Marco Estrada, Kameron Loe and Chris Narveson, nobody could escape the ruthless bat of the massive hitter.
"The last time we saw them at their place he was swinging the bat just like this," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said. "You can't make mistakes to him. You have to hit spots. You have to keep it down in the zone."
Pujols put the team in the driving seat in the very first inning with his two-run homer and then scored a two-run double in the top of the third inning to make it 4-0 for the St. Louis Cardinals. Edwin Jackson of the Cardinals did well to save the lead the
team made.
With Nick Punto scoring a single in the bottom of the third, Rickie Weeks was first to score for the Brewers with his two-run homer, bringing the Cardinals lead down to 5-2. But that did not last long as Pujols hit a one-run double and Lance Berkman scored
a single in the fifth to take the Cardinals lead to 7-2.
Kameron Loe was subject to big hits by Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina, David Freese and Nick Punto as each of them scored a run in the 6-hit seventh inning, giving the Cardinals a safe edge of 11-2. Prince Fielder hit a homer in the eighth but it was too late
to make any effect on the outcome of the game.
David Freese scored a homer in the ninth to formally enunciate the team’s victory with a 12-3 lead. It was Jason Motte who pitched a shutout ninth to seal the victory for the St. Louis Cardinals, bringing them back in the best-of-seven series of the NLCS.
The Cardinals will be happy with their dominating performance and the fact that their big hitter Pujols is in tremendous batting form.
