Albert Pujols talks about St. Louis Cardinals’ deal
The fiery first baseman of the St. Louis Cardinals’, Albert Pujols, has finally spoken of the situation that has developed between him and the club.
The player talked of the offer rejection and talked about a future deal discussion after the season ended. His statement came out recently and he iterated his stance on the situation that had developed.
His focus was immensely on getting the matter out of the frame as his main emphasis has been on preparing for the season ahead.
The negotiations ended on Wednesday, 11 am, after Pujols, reportedly declined a $25 million annual salary payoff across 10 years. The first baseman wasn’t able to come to an agreement with the club and hence ended the meeting with the club entirely.
Albert had set up a deadline for Wednesday and the situation was not productive as no extension deals came into effect.
Pujols wanted no distractions for his Spring Training schedule, which is why he placed a deadline in the mix.
"It was for that reason", Pujols said in a statement, “That we came up with a deadline. I hope that the media are respectful toward my family, my teammates, coaches and the Cardinals Organization in honouring this request".
"I have the utmost respect for Mr. (Bill) DeWitt, Mo and the rest of the Cardinals Organization and the path that these negotiations have taken, will not impact our relationship moving forward in any way".
The player is reportedly seeking more options outside the Cardinals’ branch. There has been a demand for 10 years in play and Pujols is rumoured to be seeking about $300 million in the market.
If the salary is evenly distributed, he could avail $30 million, each year. The player to be making the most money in baseball happens to be Alex Rodriguez and he plays for the New York Yankees. With Mark Teixeira there, Pujols wouldn’t possibly fit in there.
The same goes for the likes of Boston Red Sox, who have established players on those positions. Nothing is for certain right now. It’s too early to call a suitor for Pujols’ services but it may not take the entire 2011 regular season to figure it out, either.
