Albert Ramos, Ernests Gulbis stunned in the second round – Bet-at-home Cup 2012
Filippo Volandri beats Albert Ramos 6-4, 6-4
Filippo Volandri of Italy performed brilliantly in his rain-delayed match to topple the fourth seeded Spaniard, Albert Ramos, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Bet-at-home Cup on Thursday.
Just three singles matches were finished on Wednesday, as rain disrupted most of the play in Kitzbuhel.
Volandri and Ramos started the encounter in a steady manner, winning their serves in the first six games to equalise the score at 3-3. The Italian bagged breakthrough in the seventh and capitalised on that to capture it 6-4.
In the second set, Volandri struck in the very first game and consolidated on it to gain a 2-0 advantage. The Italian was about to seal the contest, as he broke Ramos in the seventh game to go up 5-2 and serve for the set but he
lost two in a row to shorten the lead to 5-4. Volandri did not lose his second opportunity and closed it 6-4.
The Italian needed just an hour and 35 minutes to complete the win over his Spanish rival.
Volandri will play the world number 107, Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil, in the quarters.
Rogerio Dutra Silva defeats Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-4
Silva played fearlessly to knock down the seventh seed, Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, in the round of 16, reaching his first quarter-final of the season in a tour level event.
It took the Brazilian one hour and 19 minutes to register this win over the world number 67.
There was no break of serve in the opening six games, squaring off the score at 3-3. Silva hit a blow to Gulbis in the seventh and captured his subsequent serve to attain a 5-3 lead. The Latvian held to reduce the trail to 4-5
but he failed to level the score, losing it 4-6.
Silva struck in the opening game of the second set and consolidated on it to move ahead 2-0. The Brazilian nailed second break in the fifth to grab a 4-1 advantage but lost the next two, taking the score to 4-3. Silva did not allow
Gulbis to make another strike, serving it out at 5-4.
The Brazilian was a bit erratic on the second deliveries, committing four double faults and losing 11 of the 27 points. However, he did a good job on the first ones, winning 25 of the 30. Silva evaded four of the five break threats
he came across and availed three of the seven chances he got in the match.
