Albert Ramos, Igor Andreev qualify for second round – Copa Claro 2012
Albert Ramos upsets Juan Ignacio Chela 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
Unseeded Albert Ramos caused the first major upset of the tournament, as he rallied past eighth seed Juan Ignacio Chela in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 during the first round at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, February 21. The match lasted for two
hours and 42 minutes.
No one could have imagined a loss for Chela the way he had started the match. The Argentinean grabbed first four games of the opener to take a 4-0 lead. Ramos tried to come back as he snatched a couple of his opponent’s games but Chela succeeded in serving
out the set 5-4.
Ramos needed only a single break of serve in the second, as he comfortably held all of his own to seal the set 6-3. The score could have been worse for Chela, had he not survived a scare in the sixth game.
With the winning momentum on his side, Ramos made an impressive start in the decider. The Spaniard made two breakthroughs to claim a 5-1 lead. Chela won three games in a row to reduce the trail but his efforts fell short, as Ramos captured the set 6-4.
Ramos is drawn to meet former World Number 5, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, in the round of 16.
Igor Andreev thrashes Blaz Kavcic 6-2, 6-2
World Number 118, Igor Andreev crushed Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. The Russian, Andreev, needed just an hour and five minutes to rout his opponent.
Andreev took a lead at the start of the match, as he broke Kavcic in the first and third game to snatch a 4-0 lead. The Russian kept the advantage till the end of the opener, clinching it 6-2.
The 28-year-old put pressure on Kavcic’s second serves, capturing seven of the ten points. The Slovenian committed a poor six double faults and failed to save the two break points he came across in the first set.
The story of the second was not much different from the opener. Andreev won the first three games, breaking the Slovenian in the first and third game. The Russian let Kavcic win just two games, sealing the set 6-2.
Kavcic improved his serves as he reduced his double fault to one and hit 72 percent of the first deliveries but the Slovenian failed to put away the three break threats he faced in the second set.
Andreev is pitted against seventh seed Fernando Verdasco in the second round.
