Albert Ramos-Vinolas bows down to Federico Delbonis in round one – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain was a victim of majestic straight sets 6-3, 6-2 upset at the hands of the 21-year-old Argentine, Federico Delbonis, in the opening round clash of the Mutua Madrid Open.
It was just a matter of 72 minutes before the local competitor blasted past the host. The Argentine broke the chain of two losses in a row against the local and levelled the head-to-head scores at 2-2.
Delbonis started off in emphatic fashion having smashed four winners in the opening game to stamp his authority. However, the host was not unsettled by the onslaught of the host and registered a tight serve hold to begin his campaign.
Soon afterwards, the Argentine took the lead in the fourth game, courtesy to a delicate drop shot that earned him the breakpoint. He scuttled past the Spaniard with another thumping serve hold to stamp a lead of 4-1.
Both players continued to capitalize on their serves. Delbonis was twice under the cosh but saved breakpoints to keep the lead intact and take the first set. Crowd was left dejected at the performance of their local hero who was losing to an underdog.
Trailing one set down, the 39th ranked Spaniard lost the opening serve game and went down 0-2 at the start. It was getting pretty ominous for the local and the support from the crowd was decreasing at an increasing rate with every successful rally
for the visitor.
Both players bagged serve games and pushed the scores to 4-2 in favour of the visitor before the match favourite host lost another serve game and gifted a resounding lead of 5-2 to his opponent. Delbonis stayed focused and bagged the final serve game to
register a major upset of the day.
Delbonis is the successful qualifier and his performance in the opening set will definitely boost his ranking in the latest edition on upcoming Monday. For the time being, he will have a very tough test against the seventh seed Serb tennis ace, Janko Tipsarevic,
in the next round. There is a chance of another upset considering the poor form of the Serb.
