Albert Ramos beats Pere Riba to move in round of 8 – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Pere Riba-Madrid, Spaniard, opened up against compatriot, Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the 2nd round fixture of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011 at the heart of Romania, Bucharest. Playing for a long 2 hours and 54 minutes
Ramos ran away winning 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and into the quarter-final round.
Firing off with the first set, Riba opened up serving first and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following up next, compatriot, Ramos, levelled up in no time and switched back the serve. The set ignited when both players saved
breakpoints to win respected served games.
However, with scores at 3-2, Riba fired up a sudden forehand winner breaking the world No.87 and took the lead, 4-2. With two games left for the world No.72 to bag the set, the Spaniard mustered his compatriot serving out game
7 following with a breakpoint winner in game 8 ending the set 6-2. Riba led the match 1-0.
Standing strong to serve out the opening game of the second set, Riba got a joggle from the world No.87. Breaking the 23-year-old in game 1, Ramos took the lead winning 2 games straight, 2-0. Finally, the right handed world No.72
made his mark winning his first game of the second set and switched the serve back.
Ramos served out game 4, as his compatriot followed to cut the lead to 2-3 and stood to return again. Ramos continued to maintain his lead while the first set dominator tried to break but could not succeed.
With scores at 3-5, both served out one game each and the set ended at 6-4 in favour of the world No.87. The match was now at 1-1 with Riba to serve out the opening game of the decider.
Opening up the final set, world No.72 gleamed ahead of Ramos bombing him with a serve-break-serve weapon and gained a 3 games lead. Serving out the next game, Ramos finally triggered his side of the scoreboard, 1-3.
Saving a breakpoint on his serve, Riba extended his lead to 4-1 before his rival started to fight back. Winning game 6 the world No.87 seemed improving in covering the court. With one game win each for the two, the scores scorched
up at 5-3 and Riba to serve next.
Ramos made his move when he broke compatriot, world No.72, in game 9 and served out game 10 to level the scores. Feeling confident as he thought he had made it, disaster struck for the world No.72 as Ramos broke again and immediately
served out game 12 finishing off the final set 7-5 and walk off with a berth in the quarterfinal round.
With a close win over his compatriot, the two shook hands as one headed to the quarterfinal while the other head back home. Chairing the quarter-final, Ramos will now face Florian Mayer, seeded second, to battle it out for a spot
in the semis.
