Albert Ramos downs Rajeev Ram to enter round two – Valencia Open 2012
Local challenger, Albert Ramos, took down the American qualifier, Rajeev Ram, in straight sets at the Valencia Open 2012 on Monday. He juggled up a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the world number 93 to secure a place in the round of 16 at this indoor hard court
event taking place in Valencia, Spain.
The left-hander from Spain displayed brilliant skills to outsmart Ram in their first encounter. After earning success in one hour and 41 minutes, Ramos edged in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 1-0 against the 28-year-old
to power into the second round at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències.
Ramos comfortably entered this ATP World Tour 500 Series event taking place from 20th to 28th October. He drew the first blood in the fifth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. The Spaniard kept his remaining serves with conviction and after
capitalising on another break chance in the last game, he clicked the opener with a 6-3 score line. He superbly warded off all five breakpoints he came across and availed two out of 10 break chances to inch towards glory.
Ranked 47th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ramos maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He smoothly held his entire serves until he got the coveted break in the eighth game. The Spaniard plucked his serve
once and sealed the set by winning six games to three. He blocked both breakpoints he came across and converted one out of three break chances to his advantage.
The Barcelona native smashed fewer aces but committed fewer unforced errors to cover it up. He nudged up a lower first serve share of 49 per cent as compared to his rival’s 59 per cent but impressively marked 22 out of 28 points on it.
Ramos will square off against the winner of the match between top seeded David Ferrer and the Belgian qualifier, Olivier Rochus.
The former world number seven, Fernando Verdasco, will accompany his compatriot in the following round. He overpowered the wild card entrant, Tommy Robredo, in straight sets to progress.
