Albert Ramos eases past Nils Langer into the main draw – German Tennis Championships 2011
In a second round qualifying singles match in Hamburg, second seed Albert Ramos made significant headway into the tournament by qualifying for the main draws of the Open German Tennis Championships 2011, an ATP World Tour 500.
He won the closely contested match against German wild card hopeful Nil Langer, with the scores sealed at 6-7(4), 6-3 and 6-4. The match lasted for a gruelling two hours and fifty minutes.
The second seed Spaniard Ramos had previously out run German Jaan-Frederik Brunken in his opening match. While the wild card entrant German Langer had pulled off surprising straight set 7-5, 6-4 wins against seventh seed Facundo
Bagnis.
Langer started play by opening serve in the first game and the scores steadily built up to the 2-2 mark. Both the players recorded one ace each in the first set and the longest set of the match. They also broke the other player’s
serve twice during the entire first set and the scores gradually eased up to the 5-5 mark. The 10th and 11th games saw each player registering one game each and the set eventually went into the tiebreak. Langer showing excellent skill
and perseverance won the tiebreak with 7 points against Ramos’s meagre 4.
Ramos stroked back with an unforgiving vengeance in the second and third sets and bulldozed his opponent to take home the match. Ramos served the opening game of the second set. Ramos did not face a single serve break in the second
set and instead registered a successfully converted breakpoint in the sixth game. Both the contenders accumulated two aces each but Langer committed one double fault. The set ended at 6-3 in Ramos’s favour who was able to score 20 service points against the
14 scored by Langer.
The third set followed precedent set in the second and Ramos sealed the scoreboard at 6-4 at the set’s end, effectively winning the match. With the scores quickly levelled at 2-2, Ramos broke Langer’s serve in the 5th set
of the match limiting him to just eighteen points. Ramos showed exceptional skill while serving and maintained a first serve percentage of around 72% in the last set. He was able to get 26 of the 38 serve points.
Ramos is now securely berthed in the main draws of the competition and in his first round match he’ll have to duel with French Adrian Mannarino, to secure a place in the match against top seed (in the main draws) Gael Monfils.
