Albert Ramos ousts Igor Andreev to reach final showdown – Grand Prix Hassan II 2012
Seventh seed, Albert Ramos, took down the Russian contender, Igor Andreev, in straight sets at the Grand Prix Hassan II 2012 on Saturday. He penned down a 6-3, 7-6(7) victory against the world number 100 to secure a place in the title-round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Casablanca, Morocco.
Ramos got the better of the 28-year-old after smashing powerful groundstrokes from his box of tricks in their third meeting. After earning the limelight in one hour and 52 minutes, Ramos improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against
the Russian.
The left-handed Spaniard assertively entered the Complexe Al Amal and swiped in his entire serves after warding off the four breakpoints he faced. He got the breakthrough in the fourth game after cashing in the lone break opportunity and sealed the opener
by winning six games to three.
Ranked 52nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ramos lost his winning path in the proceeding set and suffered the first blow in the sixth game to go 2-5 down. However, he recovered in the ninth game and then held his composure
to drag the set to the tie-breaker. The Spaniard edged past Andreev in it and clinched the set with a 7-6(7) score line.
Summing up the Spaniard’s performance, Ramos clobbered a lower first serve share of 58 per cent as compared to his rival’s 66 per cent and impressively 37 out of 52 points on it. He spilled more errors but finished the deal with 79 points.
Next in line for Ramos is his third seeded compatriot, Pablo Andujar, who tumbled over Italy’s Flavio Cipolla in straight sets to set-up this final battle.
The world number 58 lost his serve three times but capitalised on five out of 11 break chances to formulate a 6-3, 7-5 victory in almost two hours. He committed more double faults and jolted down a lower first serve share of 62 per cent as compared to Cipolla’s
75 per cent. Andujar also amazingly availed 35 out of 56 points on it to prevail throughout the match.
