Albert Ramos ousts Victor Hanescu to enter quarters – Grand Prix Hassan II 2012
Seventh seed, Albert Ramos, tumbled over the Romanian contestant, Victor Hanescu, in straight sets at the Grand Prix Hassan II 2012 on Thursday. He nudged up a 6-2, 6-4 success against the Romanian veteran to book a spot in the last eight at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Morocco.
The 24-year-old proved his class and after breaking his opponent’s serve three times, he earned the glory in 82 minutes. The stars previously faced each other at the Bucharest ATP event and after pocketing this match, Ramos not only extended his lead in
the head-to-head series by 2-0 against the Romanian but also advanced into the quarter-finals.
The left-handed Spaniard flashed into the Complexe Al Amal and reeled off five games in a row to leap at 5-1. He then slid his serve once more and bagged the opener with an assuring 6-2 score line. Ramos held his entire serves without facing any obstacle
and cashed in both break opportunities.
Ramos kept momentum rolling into the following set and plucked his entire serves after blocking the lone breakpoint he faced. The Spaniard got the breakthrough in the third game and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
All in all, the higher ranked contestant clobbered a poor first serve share of 45 per cent as opposed to Hanescu’s 73 per cent but impressively availed 18 out of 25 points on it.
Next up for Ramos is the French booming star, Jeremy Chardy.
"The match was more difficult than what the result says," said the high-spirited Spaniard after the match. "I'm happy that I won. Against Chardy it will be a difficult match. He has very powerful ground strokes and played a good match today."
Chardy shocked the top seeded German, Florian Mayer, with a breadstick in 58 minutes to secure this spot. The world number 64 lost his serve twice but capitalised on six out of 11 break chances to formulate a 6-3, 6-1 victory. He also hammered six aces and
in spite of producing a lower first serve share, Chardy clicked 18 out of 22 points on it.
