Albert Ramos overtakes Adrian Mannarino in the first round – German Tennis Championships 2011
In another upset win on Monday, Albert Ramos sent packing his much higher ranked opponent Adrian Mannarino in a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The lopsided match lasted for a little over an hour and the French Mannarino posed almost no difficulty
to his Spanish opponent Ramos. Ramos is now safely through to the second round of the main draws.
Alberto Ramos had earlier qualified to enter the main draws of the competition by defeating wild card entrant Nils Langer 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 in the final qualifying match. Ramos had been seeded second in the round and is currently
ranked at 83 in the world rankings. Mannarino meanwhile had not been seeded in the singles draw of the tournament and unfortunately for him he didn’t last even his first match of the bet-at-home Open German Championships 2011. Mannarino is currently ranked
at No. 51 in the singles ranking, a staggering 32 positions above his opponent. This match was the players’ first meeting.
The first set quickly reached the level 2-2 mark before Ramos unleashed his true potential and easily overtook his opponent from that point on. Mannarino was unable to ward off even a single breakpoint and Ramos, taking full benefit
of this weakness, wreaked havoc with two bone crushing serves breaks in the first set. Ramos gathered an impressive 12 points off his 13 serves while Mannarino accumulated 7 off 10 serves. Both the players served at almost equal percentages. Ramos scored 2
aces and committed a single double fault against Mannarino who managed 1 ace but 2 double faults. Ramos successfully swerved past the single breakpoint scenario that he faced in the set and won decisively with the scoreboard at 6-2.
The second set saw Mannarino’s performance improve a notch and he posed greater resistance to Ramos’s sweeping serves. Mannarino opened the second set and garnered a game point in the very first game of the second set. Mannarino
then took the lead and continued it for three successive games. He even registered a break of serve in the fourth game limiting Ramos to 30 points in that game. Just when the prospects of a comeback looked promising Ramos fought back and with unforgiving vengeance.
He registered two vicious breaks of serve and sent his opponent trailing far behind. The second set ended 6-4 in Ramos’s account.
Mannarino scored a total of 41 points against Ramos’s insurmountable total of 57 points, of which 36 were service points and 21 return points.
Ramos’s next match is against top seed Gael Monfils, from France and all that remains to be seen is if Ramos is able to sustain his form.
