Albert Ramos overthrows Rik De Voest in final qualifier – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Albert Ramos, Spanish world No. 77, made his way into the main draw of the 2011 Shanghai Rolex Masters clobbering world No.129, Rik De Voest in the final qualifying round. Playing at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai,
China, Ramos bewildered the South African 31-year-old in an hour and 47 minutes to secure a 6-4, 6-4 win and a berth in the main draw.
Comparatively, the match was a once side win, Voest was no match against the 23-year-old’s superior agility and power. Ramos also had a better record in his last 10 fixtures. Another competitive edge that the Spaniard has was that
he had played top ranked players recently that added to his learning.
With the South African serving first for the match, Ramos plucked away the first game breaking the world No.129 and advantaging with the lead. Serving out his second consecutive win, the 23-year-old put forward a 2 games lead with
a concrete defence to follow up with.
The South African won his first game serving out game 3, however, could not break back to level up the scores any soon. With an unbreakable defence and saving 3 breakpoints, the world No.77, Ramos, kept on winning games on his
serve and led the set off winning 6-4.
With the first set won with 37 points, Ramos shredded the South African counterpart once again with the same score. Although Voest had a better follow through in the second set, he was helpless in front of the raging Spanish bull.
Anyhow, serving out game 1, the veteran took the lead, however, was levelled up instantly by the Spaniard, 1-1.
Rallying out next, the two levelled up at 2-2 and then at 3-3. However, the tables turned for the South African as Ramos astounded the world No.129 with a breakpoint in game 7 and served out the next to lead the set 5-3. Left with
just one more game to finish off the two returned a game winning and ending the set 6-4 in favour of the Spaniard.
Winning in straight sets, Ramos jumped to celebrate his entry into the main draw of the Shanghai Masters 2011. However, his next follow up is against the mighty Croatian, Marin Cilic, ranked world No.22. Predictably, Cilic would
take the opening round as the gigantic Croatian is in perfect form coming from an unsuccessful final run at the 2011 China Open in Beijing last week.
