Brianti/Martic edge past Bremond/Hsu to secure a quarterfinal spot – WANLIMA Women’s Open 2011
Second seeds, Italy’s Alberta Brianti and Croat Petra Martic, dumped French Taiwanese team of Iryna Bremond and Wen-hsin Hsu, in brutal straight sets at the WANLIMA Open 2011, a WTA International event held in Guangzhou, People’s
Republic of China. They registered a 7-5, 7-5 victory in this awe-inspiring match which saw a series of exchange of breaks between the two pairs on Wednesday.
The high spirited seeds displayed exceptional counter attacking skills to trash the tandem of Bremond and Hsu in almost one and half hours on their first meeting.
Brianti and Martic marched into the Guangzhou’s outdoor hard courts and got the coveted break in the opening game. However, they could not maintain their lead and lost their serve in the very next game. The seeded duo lost their
way and gifted away another serve in the fourth game to go 3-1 down. After this, the Italian Croat pair re-focused and bagged in next four games consecutively. Despite levelling the scores again in the tenth game, they broke their opponent’s serve again in
the next game to eventually seal the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The higher ranked pair kept momentum sailing into the final set and got the first blood in the opening game. They held their opening serve and extended their lead to 2-0. Regardless of losing their track afterwards and going 5-2
down, Brianti and Martic made an epic comeback after plucking in next five games in a row and clinched the set with a 7-5 win.
Overall, the blissful duo clobbered a slightly higher first serve share of 72 percent as compared to Bremond Hsu team’s 67 percent and registered a plausible 53 percent win on it. They warded off nine out of fourteen breakpoints
faced and converted seven out of thirteen breakpoint opportunities to their advantage.
They will next face local wild card entrants, Chen Liang and Tan Tian who bounced to win against Ukrainians Alona Bondarenko and Mariya Koryttseva with a 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory on Monday.
Top seeded Australians Jarmila Gajdosova and Anastasia Rodionova on the other hand faced a different fate in the quarter-finals. They suffered a 3-6, 6-7(1) loss at the hands of Taiwanese tandem of Hao-ching Chan and Yung-jan Chan
earlier that day.
The highest ranked pair of the tournament showed dismal performance and spilled several unforced errors and four double faults. They manifested a lower first serve share and regardless of saving eleven out of fifteen breakpoints
faced, the Australian duo converted only two out of seven breakpoint chances to their advantage.
