Albertinia Golf Club takes part in the 2012 Sanlam Cancer Challenge – Golf News
Albertinia Golf Club Mossel Bay in the Eastern Cape participated in the 2012 Sanlam Cancer Challenge, which is now the biggest charitable sporting event in South Africa.
Albertinia is the home club for the British Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen. Each year, different clubs from all over the country join the tournament with an aim to collect the proceeds for helping the charity.
Apart from playing on the course, the players take part in other different activities to raise the funds.
Some of them sell t-shirts, some sell golf accessories and some of them will be seen selling boerewors rolls. So, there is no restriction on how to raise money as far as it is legal.
Last year, a total of 37000 amateur golfers from 800 clubs participated in the event and raised millions of rands for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
In total, the event has managed to gather R26 million since the inaugural event was held in 1993.
All the funds are allocated to different research fields at the CANSA and to the treatment of the diseases afterwards.
Prins Albert Golf Club in the Central Karoo was the leading fund raiser this year too, as it was last year. The club managed to collect R18210 compared to the R13000 they collected last year.
Therefore, it was a significant increase and the club plans to take it to further levels to help the charitable cause.
The more interesting achievement of the club is to gather all the funds with a team of just 11 members.
Gary van Loggerenberg, Sanlam Sponsorship Manager, said that he was proud to be a part of the programme that helps in curing the cancer in South Africa.
Moreover, the golfers from all over the country show their interest and enthusiasm in participating in the tournament, which is a positive sign for the good cause.
“For the past 20 years we’ve been proud to support CANSA with the help of thousands of golfers around South Africa,” said Loggerenberg.
“This is a tournament that enables club golfers anywhere in the country to do something positive and make a real impact through the game they love,” he added.
Oosthuizen’s Albertinia Golf Club, with the help of 19 members, raised R1400 in its first appearance in the event.
